The Summer Assignment
Yes, as with most Advanced
Placement courses, there is a summer assignment that must be completed prior to
day one of next year. The purpose of the summer assignments and readings is to
provide the student a foundation from which academic growth can be cultivated.
These assignments will also help to prepare prospective students for the
demanding nature of Advanced Placement United States History and English Language and Composition.
Failure to complete the summer reading and assignment may have a significant impact on your first quarter grade for BOTH AP US History and AP Lang. The assignment contained herein provides you the critical framework necessary for successful navigation of both of the AP courses you are enrolling in.

Steps for Success
- Join the Cohort Community on Edmodo. Please email either Mr. Flynn ([email protected]) or Mr. Lay ([email protected]) for the Edmodo group code.
- Introduce yourself! It may sound silly, but we want to get to know you. Post a brief introduction of yourself on the Community Wall. Who are you? What do you do? What motivates you? What do you expect to gain from this cohort? What can you do to keep yourself accountable throughout the next school year?
Time Management Tip
Managing your time is pivotal to success both in this class, in college, and beyond. You will be tasked with long-term objectives (projects, papers, etc.) throughout our course, starting with your summer assignment, which will require reading, scheduling, and organizing long before the respective objective is due. For example, you will receive information about projects and papers for that quarter at the beginning of that respective quarter. It is recommended that you break your tasks into manageable chunks so that you are not putting everything off until the very last minute. It is imperative that you implement a reading and writing plan that allows you to complete assigned readings and tasks on time and with as little stress as possible.
